Dungeon Crawler Carl

Not the biggest fan. 2 out of 5 stars. I didn’t hate it, but I didn’t love it either. LitRPG is a new genre for me. Having this be the first of the genre, I’m not entirely sure if it is the book itself or the genre that I am not a fan of. I have long been a fantasy reader. I mostly read to escape reality (not necessarily in a bad way), I just prefer the fantasy genre.
This did not quite scratch the fantasy or sci-fi itch. Yes, there are aliens, but I feel that they brushed past it like it wasn’t that big of a deal. New alien species get a ‘whoa that’s weird, back to me’ treatment. I understand that the premise of the book is that the protagonist’s world was turned upside down and so didn’t quite have the time to react to what was really happening.
The rpg aspect was quite fun. I do find myself considering continuing to read the series just based on wanting to see what happens and see the gear that Carl and Princess find. There is foreshadowing of an underlying resistance, but the first book didn’t quite get to it. Not sure if I want to commit to more just to find out that it is a continuation of the same.
Very much reminded me of the movie “Guns Akimbo”.
Quite a few pop-culture references that had me laughing at times, but mostly rolling my eyes.
